What Does it Mean To Blog Ping?
If you own a blog and want more traffic to your blog then you will most likely want to use a blog ping. A 'ping' is simply an Internet program that sends a message to another computer in order to generate a response. Think of it as a telephone call, where you call your friend to ask if they are at home and still live there and everything is still going well.
It used to be that computer technicians were the ones who used "Ping'ing" as a means to solve technical problems. Things like traffic problems or slow connections often need the aid of a Ping to map out the problem. But now with the advent of blogs, and the exponential growth of these blogs. Bloggers have been using various services like Technorati, Google and many others to increase their traffic and reader audeince. Bloggers have built in with their software they use (Wordpress, Blogger etc.) a service that will "call home" to the high traffic sites of Google and Technorati and let it know there is new articles waiting to be submitted, and submit these articles to the mass of users at those sites.
How many services Ping on behalf of a blogger? There is likely well over 50 plus services that I have come across. Each with its own list of sites they will ping on your behalf.
Most blogging software as I have mentioned will Ping for you each time you publish an article. In order to obtain maximum benefit from blog pinging, you will need to ping each individual pinging site every time you add new content to your blog. This can be quite the chore if you own more than one blog.
Not to worry, there are services who will Ping on your behalf to multiple sites at once. Ping-o-Matic (http://pingomatic.com) being one of those services. Likely one of the more better known services at that. These services are easy to use and only require you to enter your blogs URL, your blogs title or name and then ask you to list the sites you wish it to Ping on your behalf.
A note of warning, do not spam these sites or use them unless you have published new content. Or you may find yourself guilty of whats known as "spinging" and find yourself on a blacklist.
If you consistently submit your blog to pinging services after every new post, you should see an increase in traffic to your blog.
