Many have noticed that Google's Adsense Contextual ads for the last week have had an extra added feature. A scrolling, or clickable arrows section which let the reader manipulate the ads to show "extra" ads that would not have prior, been shown.

This has been in the works for awhile and after 3 months of testing was given the green light to be the "norm". As of April 2nd, this new feature was officially announced and released in their blog.

For those that are wondering, clicks on the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons won’t generate earnings, but these buttons will help improve both advertiser value and your potential revenue.

When users click on the buttons, they begin interacting with the ads and are more likely to find the specific offering they are looking for, which can be good news for the publisher, leading to higher earnings.

I suppose time will tell how effective these new features are for publishers, if in fact this will increase earnings. My thought is that in the short term, indeed earnings likely will rise somewhat but I am assuming the long term, the novelty will wear off and earnings will taper back to the "norm". We will just have to wait and see how this new feature pans out for publishers.
